A Doula is a non-medical labor assistant who provides any needed emotional and physical support measures to assist a woman through the birthing process and to help the partner participate in birth at his/her comfort level. The Doula is trained in methods of pain management and birth procedures to assist the parents in their comfort during, and understanding of, the birth process.
Merriam Webster says: Doula (dou-la) - a woman experienced in childbirth who provides advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth
DONA says: The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.
Studies have shown that when Doulas attend birth labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier, and they breastfeed more easily.
The Ohio Doula services include:
CONSULTATION: One (free) meeting before contracts are signed to meet and get to know each other.
PRENATAL: At least one prenatal visit in our office or at your home (approx. 2 -3 hours). We will discuss: health history, labor & delivery preferences, creating a birth preference list, comfort measures you wish to use during labor, goals for labor and bonding, and any other concerns you and your partner have. We can also review the foundations for breastfeeding if you desire and plan for us to support you during initial latch. Basic Doula service includes up to 2 pre-natal meetings at the client's discretion. If you request a 2nd meeting we can cover basic Comfort Measures.
Labor: We provide labor support from the time you call us to attend your labor until after your baby is born (including breastfeeding help if you like). We have a birth ball and peanut ball and can provide comfort measures such as light touch massage, and a variety of positions for labor and delivery. Photography; We are thrilled to take random shots during labor and delivery with your camera, but our priority will be supporting you. There are excellent professional birth photographers in Central Ohio.
Postpartum: We will remain with you 1 to 2 hours after birth. A postpartum visit will be arranged at your convenience, generally 2 days to 2 weeks after your birth. We will review the birth notes and observations made during labor and delivery. This is a great opportunity to ask any questions and review anything you did not understand or are concerned about.
Phone and Web Support: Throughout your pregnancy and after the birth we are available 24/7 for phone and web support. We consider ourselves "on-call" from the day you sign the contract.
Back-up Doula: You will have a back-up Doula available. If Jen AND Linsey are ill, their children are incredibly ill, or there is an emergency, you will have a trained Doula to attend you. You always have the opportunity to meet with the back-up.
